Step into Birds, the latest immersive work by acclaimed director and 3D artist Nick DeBoar, whose past credits span The Great Gatsby, The Lego Movie, and Game of Thrones.
Blending over two decades of digital craft with cutting-edge tools like Unreal Engine and Kinect, Birds invites audiences into a living, responsive environment where movement reshapes a tranquil flock of geese in real time. In the Lab Rats session Nick will talk about how he created “Birds”, demonstrate how it works and then invite LAB RATS attendees to interaction with his immersive creation.
Developed through the ILA Artist Fund, this evolving installation explores the tension between stillness and disruption – testing new possibilities for large-scale, reactive environments where viewers don’t just observe the artwork but activate it.

ABOUT LAB RATS
Lab Rats is ILA’s public program focused on creative technology, shared learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration as a series of workshops, artist presentations, networking sessions, and discussion panels. With an emphasis on developing creative communities, Lab Rats fosters a network of emerging and established artists, providing opportunities for participants to upskill, reskill and learn new skills, build portfolios and make connections that expand creative and career prospects within the creative industry.

HOW TO GET HERE
Immersive Light and Art | ILA is located in the heart of Adelaide’s West End at 63 Light Square. The ILA Studio can be found upstairs on level 1, accessible by stairs or lift.
A combination of free and ticketed (until 6pm) street parking is available directly outside the venue on Light Square, with additional parking available nearby on Waymouth Street and Elizabeth Street, both just a short walk away. For added convenience, K Park Car Parks on Currie Street is also located close to this venue.
ILA is also easily accessible via public transport, with bus, tram and train options within walking distance. We are a short walk from the North Terrace and King William Road tram stops, Adelaide Railway Station and have multiple bus routes operating along nearby Currie Street.
ACCESS INFORMATION
The ILA Studio is located on level 1 of Immersive Light and Art | ILA. There is level access via a lift to the first floor and a unisex accessible toilet is available on level 1 to ensure a comfortable experience for all guests.
