For two weeks only, you can see a selection of the artist’s iconic works alongside contemporary pieces exploring who we are as Australians and our relationship with our recent history.
Spanning 600 full-colour pages, Our Rights and Pleasures documents Hill’s major community arts projects alongside his extensive body of paintings and prints, accompanied by texts from leading art theorists and community leaders.
Throughout his career, Hill’s practice has closely observed Australia’s changing social and cultural landscape. Cultural commentator Andrew Jakubowicz describes Hill’s work as “shadowing modern Australia, peering into its eyes, reading its footsteps like some tracker of yore,” while theorist and art philosopher Michael Newall characterises Hill’s later work as being about “the positive forms that social relations take” and questions of “how we coexist” and “how we relate to each other”.
Together, the book and exhibition reflect on Australia’s evolving social and cultural landscape, tracing our journey as a multicultural nation and considering the pathways ahead. Drawing on a lifetime spent working at the intersection of Australia’s diverse communities, Hill offers a distinctive perspective on where we have come from, who we are today and how our shared identity continues to evolve.
The book Our Rights and Pleasures by Andrew Hill will be available to purchase in the Gallery and from the ILA Bar.
