Black Girl Rising [Adelaide Fringe]

Wed - Sun

19 March - 23 March

7pm - 8.10pm

A comedic high-energy one woman show, uncovering the toll of racism on black women’s mental health.

Are you… tired of people touching your hair? Asking where you’re from? No like, where you’re really from? Seeing microaggressions in every interaction you have?
This show is for you.

Are you… white? Committed to racial equality? An “ally”?
We’re about to find out…

Told through a mash-up of stand-up comedy, theatrical storytelling, and spoken word poetry—backed by hand-drawn animation—Black Girl Rising will shatter stereotypes with laughs, tears, and everything in between.

Linnea Tengroth entertains, provokes, and educates with graceful attitude as she details her own experience of growing up across continents. Her unique perspective on race and racism, and how those experiences were internalised, is interwoven with punchy stand-up comedy and poignant poetry, accompanied by stunning hand-drawn animations by Brisbane artist Brydee Lister.

A truly provocative and personal experience, Linnea masterfully holds the audience in a state of insecurity, flipping the normative pressures felt by women of colour onto them. She creates a space where they don’t know whether to laugh, cringe, or cry—and exploits this tension to great cathartic effect.

With plenty of audience engagement and no white privilege to hide behind, if you don’t see this show yourself, you’ll definitely hear about it.

Black Girl Rising was awarded ‘Best New Work by an Emerging Artist’ at the 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
